The role of a Gemmologist / Diamond Expert, who will help you comprehend these differences, is at this point crucial, in order to provide you with the necessary answers and to fulfill your ultimate desire. Gemmology is a science that deals with analyzing and certifying the authenticity of gemstones.   Becoming a Gemmologist and obtaining essential and in depth gemological knowledge, entails several years of study and experience. Addressing qualified professionals with the relevant education and expertise, you ensure the right investment of your money on something that besides its monetary value also (and perhaps most importantly) has sentimental value to you and the ones you love.

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain

The Gemmological Association of Great Britain, or Gem-A, is the world’s longest established provider of gem and jewellery education.  Our Diploma in Gemmology is the direct descendant of the gem course that was proposed for the jewellery trade at the 1908 annual meeting of the National Association of Goldsmiths of Great Britain and Ireland. The first gemmology course notes and exam syllabus were produced by 1912, and the earliest diploma was awarded in 1913. Since then, our prestigious Diploma in Gemmology and Gem Diamond Diploma  have become  globally recognized as invaluable qualifications, and diploma holders may apply  for election to Fellowship (FGA) or Diamond Membership (DGA) of the Association. The  gemmological  committee set up to oversee the development of gem education matured into the independent Gemmological Association, and then The Gemmological Association of Great Britain, now a UK registered charity.
Gem-A currently forms an international community of gem professionals and enthusiasts. With our commitment to high educational standards, we serve the interests of the gem and jewellery industries and support gemmological research worldwide. In addition to our educational programmes we provide membership opportunities, a shop for the purchasing of gemmological instruments and two internationally distributed publications, Gems & Jewellery and The Journal of Gemmology. We are committed to providing the highest standards of gem education and research.
Gemmological Association of Great Britain is the oldest Association in the world and is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2008

                                                            Gemological Institute of America
On February 15, 1931, a former retail jeweler named Robert M. Shipley and his wife, Beatrice, cashed in their savings to establish the Gemological Institute of America. When most jewelers knew little about the gems they traded, Robert Shipley decided to professionalize the industry through education, research, and gemological instrumentation. The Institute, initially based out of their home, offered mimeographed mail-order courses and provided gem-testing services using borrowed microscopes and other equipment.

From these modest beginnings GIA has become an institution with more than 200,000 graduates from 13 schools in 10 countries, a prestigious laboratory  grading the world’s most important diamonds, the leading                                                                                           gemological research center, and the author the 4Cs and the International Diamond Grading System –

The Educational Training Center of the German Gemmological Association has been providing this specialized knowledge of gemstones, both in theory and practice, since it was founded in 1932.
In particular, the laboratories, with their modern state of the art equipment, and the extensive gemstone collection, to which the students have access during class make it Europe's leading educational and research institute for                                                                                            gemstones. Get to know the characteristics, deposits, developments, and criteria for determining the value of                                                                                        gemstones. Develop or refine your ability to differentiate between gemstones and their imitations and forgeries.

Meet interesting people from around the world who have one thing in common: Their fascination with gemstones.
The Training Center is located in the heart of the gemstone capital Idar-Oberstein. There, where centuries-old knowledge of traditional gemstone cutting blends with the modern creative impulses of local artists and studios, you will find all the requirements for hands-on training and education.

Greek Researhing Educational Gemmological Association (GREGA)

Until the early 80's the science of gemmology wasn't very popular in Greece. At that time Nickolas Kielty-Lamprinidis, a famous gemmologist, diamond expert and lapidary, created the first gemmological college in Greece. The college was founded by EOMMEX (Hellenic Organization of Small and Medium Enterprises & Handicrafts S.A.) and was one of the 20 colleges of G.A.G.T.L. (Gemmological Association and Gem Testing Laboratory of Great Britain) also known as A.T.C. (Allied Teaching Center). Finally the first Greek gemmologists are graduating from the college. At 1991 a team of passionate gemmologists gathered to create the first Greek gemmological association, GREGA (Greek Researching Educational Gemmological Association) under the guidance of Mr. Lamprinidis. The first and far more important intention of the Association is to research the new discoveries as well as to educate the values and the origins of gemmology to the Greek public. During the following years the Association developed in many levels….

Stone Group Laboratories

Stone Group Laboratories, LLC, provides non-destructive, advanced gemological testing services to the trade and offers global consulting services as well as custom research projects regarding colored gemstones. All is completed in a secure, modern, well-equipped laboratory. Stone Group Laboratories (SGL) began in the 1990s in response to increasing gemological challenges in the gem industry. SGL has also become a forerunner in disseminating the knowledge and practice of digital gemological spectroscopy. While new treatments and synthetics emerge, SGL continues research in the field and regularly issues reports on its findings. Their commitment is to helping the fields of gemstone dealing, gemological education, and jewelry appraising through accurate and detailed disclosures, research, and gemstone identification and treatment reports. Not only have synthetics become more challenging to separate from their natural counterparts, but treatments have also proliferated. In some cases, the two have merged, with some newer gems in the market having both a natural component, as well as a significant synthetic or artificial component. Our testing protocols and procedures provide you with the necessary answers, while supplying confidence in knowing the condition of your gemstone.
